Chapter 14

“You really believe she had nothing to do with this?” Brady asked two hours later, after they’d collected and stabled their horses, returned to the main ranch house, and called the police, who currently filled their home. At the crime scene, Adam Wilde, the DEA agent coordinating the multi-agency organized crime task force formed nine months ago, had arrived soon after the officer from the LVMPD—Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which combined the Las Vegas Police Department with the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. Lights had been set up around the perimeter of the ditch where Rains’s body had been discovered, in anticipation of a long night working the scene. The coroner’s van had arrived just minutes ago.

From across his mother’s living room, Dev’s gaze was on Ivy. “She had nothing to do with his murder,” he answered, knowing his brothers didn’t share his view. They hadn’t come to trust Ivy, hadn’t had the opportunity to see her more vulnerable moments, or what conditions she was living under. “Look at her. She’s in shock.”

Just then, Ivy met his gaze. Over the past hour, her eyes had taken on a hollow expression, her cheeks pale against the dark hair that fell around her face in waves.

Dev had the urge to go to her side, to comfort her, but she was being questioned. The LVMPD officer’s frustrated expression revealed he wasn’t getting much from her. Or maybe she didn’t have much to give.

“She could use a strong shoulder to lean on,” Rose said as she stopped by Dev’s side with a tray of coffees in one hand and a thermos in the other.

“You’re not going out there, are you?” Dev jerked his head toward the thermos.

“I thought the boys at the scene could use a pick-me-up. It’s going to be a long night.” Adam wanted the scene processed by the book and with an extra eye out for anything that could be traced back to Robert Stone or Redemption Club. They needed something irrefutable to nail the guy on.

“Stay. I’ll take it to them. I want to talk to Adam anyway and the officers are done with me.”

“You don’t want to stay for Ivy?”

Again, his eyes sought out the woman in question. Ivy was carefully composed, her back ramrod straight as she answered question after question about her relationship with Rains. “I’ll be here when they’re done. Just don’t let her leave, okay?”

Rose smiled softly. “You care for her.”

“She’s a client.” But there was a lot more to it, and the realization was slowly settling in. She’d tried to fire him, and he hadn’t wanted to listen. And his desire to be with her was more than simply wanting to bring down her father, though that was certainly a strong motivation. “And she’s alone,” he admitted when Rose only shook her head and smiled.

As Dev took the thermos from her, freeing her hand, she patted his chest. “You always had a soft heart. Just see that you take care of it. I like her, and I don’t want to be wrong, but she is a Stone.
